Why Thrifting?

I’m in an introspective mood. Ha! But I just got an email from a mom asking me why I am into thrifting? And deal hunting?

Which led me to think, well, who wouldn’t want to save money? But then again, I’m just taking my perspective into account. Some others just have the money to burn, some don’t know that its really possible to still actually get some price shavings out of things they need to buy.

Saving Money

So how did I get to be a thrifter and deal hunter?

Once upon a time, when I was single, I was a spend thrift. Yes, I lived from payday to payday. With nothing to worry about. It didn’t help matters that I found it (luckily!) to find jobs and good paying jobs (at that time ha!) at that. So I would party, shop, sleep, work. And I burn through my salary like crazy and often I had to call my mom to bail me out coz before the payday comes I ran out of money already. I shudder when someone mentions thrifting, or even http://equote.com, to get price quotes first before buying something.

So what changed all that? It was a gradual change, really. One big factor was that I got married and had a family. That totally changed my way of life. I started to think of my family first. Their needs and having emergency fund became foremost in my mind. I was also greatly influenced by my husband, who, while not really tight-fisted but knows how to spend money very wisely and investing it.

My mom too. She was the one who got me introduced to the thrills of thrifting and second hand shopping. And now, everytime I shop, specially online, I think its already programmed into me to wait for one-time sale events for the item I need and when I have things in cart, I still search like crazy for discount and free shipping coupons.

But be warned also that sometimes sale events can also be a big budget blower. I’ve learned this the hard way. Sometimes you think you saved big coz its on sale but you realize you bought things you actually don’t need. And that’s a total waste of money. So now I rarely ever go to store sale events. If I do I stick to what I want to buy in the first place. I prefer to shop sale events online, it allows me to take time to deliberate.

And what did I get out of being a thrifter? One, its FUN! Really fun. And of course, savings. Specially on clothing. I save big. For indulgences and ‘luxury wants’ I still go the thrifters way and wait for limited time sale events. So I get what I crave but at a much much lower prices.

Share a Thrift Hunt: Skirt-sy!

Whenever I go thrift shopping, I always make sure I check the teens/kids section for something for my daughter. She loves my second hand clothing finds for her. And we both love mix and matching those finds.

On a recent thrift shopping trip, I found some skirts for her. The first one a pale blue layered skirt with eyelet design. This one’s gorgeous and now her favorite skirt. She says it makes her feel like a princess. Lol! The second one is a checkered and pleated skirt. Also very nice and she loves wearing this to school.

I know the photos look like its all crumpled. I guess I was too excited about the finds that I snapped photos without even washing or ironing them. Do forgive this too excited thrifter.

Both skirts for just $0.50!! A fab deal. You have to stop wondering why I love thrift shopping. I get the same high as cigar collectors finding lowest cigar prices and deals.

Its has been eons since I last posted for the Share a Thrift Hunt meme. And now I’m back, lol. Just because I went back to thrifting clothes again. I had a very satisfying thrifting day last week and I got a couple of stuff for myself and my daughter.

Here’s one of my favorite finds – A vintage-y hibiscus themed tank top! I sooo love the print on this one and its pretty comfy too. Found it Japan Thrift Shop Phnom Penh (Toto Recycle Shop) for just $0.50.

A BB for me.

Saving with Coupons

10 years ago, I never thought I’d ever be shopping online. I imagine a lot of people think that way too. And a whole of people still are wary about shopping online. But not me. I’ve been shopping online for years already, and while there had been not so good experiences, most of the time I hit it right at the ballpark.

Shopping Coupons

So why did I get into it? Not really because I’m an early adopter than most people. Its simply because (1) I can find really unique stuff online (2) I’m lazy. Hahaha! Yes, the joys of just sitting and having your stuff delivered to your doorstep has its great advantages. (3) The anticipation. I think this is one of the reasons I love most when shopping online. Nothing beats the giddy feeling of opening packages. I call it Christmas for all seasons and (4) Lots of great deals and coupons.

If you are into shopping online, you need to get into the habit of checking for coupons. And believe me you can get lots of discounts and perks with coupons. I search for coupons for 100% of things I buy online, even if they are just small items like toggle clamps! And its not hard to find one either, just google and for sure something will come up. If you also have shops you regularly shop from, you can subscribe to the shops newsletters, some send regular shopping coupons for your use.

Take time to look for coupons when shopping online. That’s one thrifting tip that I would really really recommend.

Hubby’s a Mean Bargainer

I am a mean bargain-er. If I could get something at a much lower price then I would bargain. But I am not too tough sometimes I relent when the price is good enough. But its a different story with my husband, he’s a real bargaining pro. Lol. I remember he even bargained for the price of some leds lighting.

The problem though is that he doesn’t like going shopping so I can’t drag him on my thrifting sprees and have him bargain.

But last time I was looking to buy a rattan sofa set for our verandah and he came with me. The seller quoted the set price (1 3 seater/2 chairs and a table with glass top, including the cushions) as $130. I bargained hard and he wouldn’t give it lower than $120. Then hubby decided to step in and bargained like crazy and what do you know, we walked away with the set and paid only $95. That’s a total bargain considering the first quoted price of $130. We got a $35 ‘discount’ lol.

And he didn’t stop there, he also bargained for a big discount in case we need more cushions. Lol The seller was just left shaking his head and laughing.

Thrift Happy Tips

I’m on a little break and haven’t done any serious shopping and thrifting.  So I haven’t been posting much and besides I’m saving up for a trip and some gadget buys for this year. I’m planning to treat myself to something pricey and special this year, at least different from my usual white chocolate gift to self.

Still, I’ll be featuring some once in a while online hauls and some tutorials specially for Gmarket.

Also, it’s been a long while since I last featured a video about thrift shopping.  So I had been looking around Youtube for some cool thrifting hunting videos and found this video from AnneorShine called How To Thrift Happy. It’s brimming with thrifting tips that all of us thrift hunters would find useful.
