Save Big with Private Shopping Sites

I must confess I’m really out of my ‘thrift shopping’ element right now. I haven’t been out thrifting in weeks! Mostly coz I’m being lazy, and the weather won’t just agree with me. Sometimes it rains like it won’t let up and I hate going out when its muddy and all. So what does a shopping addict do during times like these? Well, online window shopping marathon is a cure for me. Lol. What I love about online shopping is that I could see anything and everything in shops I visit, without leaving the comforts of my sofa. I can even find sunshineyoga.com yoga mats online so I was satisfied.

Shopping online can be sooo tempting and expensive though. If you get overwhelmed that is. But I wanna share a shopping secret to everyone. Love brands but can’t quite cough up the high prices? Then shop luxury brands on a discount. How? By private shopping! Private shopping sites are online malls or sample sites who works closely with brands and bring you limited time sales and promo events so you can avail of top range brands at huge huge discounts. You need to be a member of these sites to join the sale events. Also you have to be patient in waiting for the right sale event to come along but trust me, you’ll get really fabulous deals from these sites.

A LightinTheBox.Com Purchase Review

A LightinTheBox.Com Purchase Review

I had always been wary about buying electronics online. I limit my online shopping to fashion items, cosmetics and paper products. For one, I cannot test gadgetry if I buy online. So for example I need to buy canon projector, then for sure you could see me doing intensive research first on features, reviews and whatnots about each model, then I’ll be checking out prices in different stores. Then I make the buying decision. It was only last year when hubs was in US that we both tried to buy gadgetry online.

And we got surprisingly good buys! Most of the stuff we bought were from Amazon and OfficeDepot. We got a digital cameras, a graphic tablet, Nintendo Wii’s, and finally hubby bought an HP Notebook online. And all turned out really great. So you could say this finally gave me some confidence to shop for electronic items online. But my rule would always be ‘below $200′ you know just in case…the items are defective or I need to return it. When buying online I make sure I really study a company’s shipping and return policies.

So last week I decided to try if my online shopping luck extends to the eastern side of the planet. I decided to shop for some gadgetry at LightintheBox.com, a China-based online shopping portal selling lots of affordable phones, accessories, electronics etc. I was in ‘let’s try and see what happens’ mood. Picking out products you want in Lightinthebox is actually very hard. Why? I have a hard time to choose because the choices available is simply amazing. And the prices are really hard to resist.

In the end, I picked out one touchscreen phone for hubby.  I fell in love with the features and nothing  would beat the price! The Versio Aquarius 600 Dual Card Camera WIFI Phone  for only $79.99. It’s available in several colors – white, black, pink, green, blue and red. I picked out black just to be safe. Then I also searched for a small MP3 player for my daughter since she is sooo into music, I decided on MusicTube 4G Style Card Reader MP3 Player in pink – $19.99. I also remembered needing a spare earphone and earphones in this shop are really cheap so I included one in my cart - 3.5mm High Fidelity Stereo In-Ear Earphone – $2.99.

My total loot price was $102.97 + Shipping charges {to Cambodia} – $17.34  minus a $10 off coupon, so the total bill for me was US$ 110.31. Not bad since I was getting a phone, an mp3 player and earphones. Checking out was a breeze. I simply used Paypal to pay for the goodies. You cannot choose which shipping company to use, LITB will choose which courier/partner best serves your area. But I did chat beforehand with their online chat service and asked which companies usually service my location and I was given the answer – DHL. I find DHL to be very reliable, at least in this part so I breathed a sigh of relief. Another concern for me was the import duties I will be billed with, but the customer service staff assured me the courier would handle customs clearance first, then would just bill me.

I also love Lightinthebox’s MyOrders page. You’d be able to check the status of your orders. If they are being packaged, processed and shipped. They will also provide a tracking number. So I knew that my orders were shipped on July 10 and on July 13th it was already delivered. Fast and very efficient. The courier even called us before delivery to inform us how much is the customs charge. Which was a hefty $20 but we were expecting that since we were shipping electronics and I know duties for these stuff are not cheap.

So was it worth it? A big YES! All items were packaged in one box. Inside the box, there was another layer of bubble wrap. And for the prices of the items I bought, they were pretty good. Hubby took a big liking to the phone. It has a very responsive touch screen, and he loves the WIFI and dual sim features. As for the MP3 player, the kiddo adored it. It was lightweight, very easy to operate, the only downside is that we had to buy an SD card since it was not included in the price. All in all, I’m very impressed with the products and the whole shopping experience. You can bet, I’ll be shopping there again. I’m already eyeing an Android phone I wanna have…

Here’s just some photos of the package..

Tip. Search for Lightinthebox.com coupons online before you check out. They usually have $5, $10, $20  off  codes available online depending on how much is your total purchase.

88 Japanese Furniture Warehouse

Last weekend’s gold mine. Phnom Penh is just indulging the thrift hunter in me eh? Hubby got a tip from a friend about a huge warehouse for Japanese second hand furnitures along National Road 1.  I was actually not much interested coz I thought its a little far off but since we didn’t have anything to do anyway so we went there last Sunday.

88 Japanese Furniture Warehoue is located on Lot 88 National Road 1 Poum Beoung Chouk, Sankat Nerot, Khan Mean Chey about 3 km from Monivong Bridge and Chbar Ampov Market. Landmarks? A few hundred meters past Nerot Pagoda and a little past the intersection to Bayon TV tower.

What’s inside the warehouse? Mostly home items – cabinets, tables, sofas, mattresses, cribs, car seats, bicycles, exercise equipments, kitchen items. They don’t have second hand clothing but they do have lots of bags and shoes. Since this is a warehouse/wholesaler most of the good stuff goes right out during public auctions. A lot of second-hand retailers buy by lots or containers. The leftovers are then sold on retail.

I find their prices a little steep but the good news is that you can haggle. And I hope one time I could join an auction. Here’s some photos of the goodies. {Please do excuse the blurry shots, I just took this with a phone camera}.

Checking Out Sakura Used Japanese Products

I think I just discovered another thrifting Gold Mine! A couple of days after Christmas we were driving around Phnom Penh and saw a huge banner saying “christmas and new year sale 30% off”.  The shops sign – Sakura Used Japanese Products. Now, that really got my thrifting antenna bleeping like mad.

The place is huge and almost spilling over with goodies. I saw a lot of bags, shoes, toys, clothes and they have a good number of home items. From kitchen items to home furnishings. The owner though said that furnishings are almost always snapped up and sold usually within the day they display it.

Just like this wood dining table set with four chairs with leather cushion priced at $60. Hubby was really wanting it but it was already sold and just waiting for the owner to pick it up.

Its a bit pricier compared to other thrifting shops here, like about 30-40% more expensive but its still worth checking out coz of the extensive inventory and I’m pretty sure they’ll be offering discounts if you buy more.

I didn’t buy anything on the first visit coz we were a bit pressed for time,  but I’m pretty sure I could get some FF‘s and BB‘s on this store soon.

Discovering Hengley Market in Phnom Penh

This is one market that I’ve passed by countless times but without even much of a passing glance. It’s located along St. 271 and the side fronting the road is just full of motorbike parts and accessories so I assumed everything there has something to do with motorbikes.

It wasn’t until my Peluka sister, Pinaymum posted about having gone there and scoring lots of second hand branded clothing items. So one Sunday morning last July, hubby and I both didn’t know where to go and I suggested going to Hengley Market just to check out what we could get from there.

Thankfully, Hubby is one fan of thrift hunting too. He doesn’t complain when it takes me so long to dig through piles of items to find what I want. Lol!  In fact, I think he enjoys going often to bargain/thrift shops than going to malls.

So what did we find? A maze of wholesale shops of second hand clothes! Of course, my head was screaming – GOLD MINE! GOLD MINE! Some stalls have items fixed up and hanged on racks so this is an easy browse but most of them have them on piles or in sacks so you have to be in the mood to dig.

Here’s some photos:

And who scored a lot of FF’s? Hubby! He got a couple of jeans, some really nice polo shirts. While I got myself lots of comfy house shirts and shorts most of which now belongs to my I-H-T list. Most items are priced like less than 4000 Riels ($1), jeans usually $1-2..

Definitely worth visiting again. But bring lots and lots of patience and also go when the weather is not too humid and hot..
